Kylemore Abbey

Founded in 1920, the Benedictine monastery Kylemore Abbey is one of the most beautiful and romantic sights in all of Ireland. From a distance you can admire its incredible architecture and palatial structure, and up close you can visit its six-acre Victorian Walled Garden or take the trails that are well signposted around the Abbey. Entrance to the Abbey itself is ticketed, but includes the Gothic Church, Victorian Walled Garden and other incredible sights.

Aran Islands

A visit to Aran Islands is possible in just one day by taking the ferry from Galway Bay across the North Atlantic. When you reach the three islands you will discover some of the finest natural beauty in all of Ireland, most of it relatively untouched except by the ravaging waters that surround the islands and have molded them into their shape. While the islands are worth more than just a day of sightseeing, in one day you get to see the dominating rocks that line the islands, visit incredibly significant old ancient forts, and meet locals that speak Irish and English. If you have time, choose to rent a bike to explore the islands in more depth.

Cnoc Suain

Rome to Amalfi Coast Day Trip: Praiano or Positano Day Trips

Rome to Amalfi Coast Day TripTaking a vacation to the beautiful city of Rome is a dream come true. Visiting the famous ancient Roman architecture in the iconic city will always make for an unforgettable holiday in Italy. But did you know that by renting a car you can enhance your trip to Rome by taking a day trip to the breathtaking Amalfi Coast? The home of some of Italy’s best beaches, vineyards, and local food.

In just over three hours you can be in the heart of Southern Italy, on a Rome to Amalfi Coast day trip. The only decision you need to make is whether you should take a Praiano or Positano day trip, or these other incredible Italian getaway options:

Positano

Positano Day Trips from Rome

The Cliffside village of Positano is easily reachable from Rome by car in just over three hours, and arriving in the pretty village will be well worth the drive. Explore the town’s narrow streets that are lined with the brightly colored houses and buildings – a feature that makes the region so recognizable. From Positano you can take hiking trails to the other towns and beaches, or spend the day enjoying the local boutique shops and cafes and getting to grips with its medieval history.

Praiano

Praiano Day Trips from Rome

Part of the famous Amalfi Coast line, Praiano is a relaxing village with a traditional culture just a 20 minute drive from Positano. The village has two thriving church squares, San Gennaro and San Luca, as well as bars and restaurants that are popular with young people of the town. Spend the day exploring the cute pebble beaches, particularly at Gavitella Beach, which has the longest days of sun slight on the Amalfi Coast.

Ravello

Ravello Day Trips from Rome

A day at the beautiful village of Ravello in the Amalfi Coast is well worth the drive. Set in the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast 365 meters above sea level, the town is brimming with historic sites, including a 13th century villa and a medieval-style estate. Try to head to Ravello for the annual Ravello Festival, which takes place every summer.

Sorrento

Sorrento Day Trips from Rome

Facing the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is a larger coastal town in the Amalfi Coast with a busy marina and some of the most spectacular views on the coast. Spend sun-filled days sipping iced coffee in the famous Piazza Tasso, which is lined with pretty little cafes. Like so many Amalfi towns, Sorrento’s main historic center is still reminiscent of its medieval past, with narrow alleyways and pretty churches, often the subject of many explorations through the area.

Atrani

Atrani Day Trips from Rome

The small village of Atrani is located at the base of a river valley, and is the neighbor of the larger Amalfi – this trip is great because you get to see both towns in one day. Atrani is definitely the younger and smaller sibling to Amalfi, with its own identity and traditions, it’s the perfect place to get away from the crowds. Atrani does, however, also have two very defining features – the Collegiata di Santa Maria with its yellow and green dome and its striking bell tower. Discover this charming village and its traditions after just a few hours of driving from Rome.

Italy Car Rental Tips: Theft & Damage Excess Protection

Italy Car Rental TipsRenting a car in Italy doesn’t have to be difficult, but sometimes things can go wrong. Accidents do happen and can be a lot more costly and difficult when you are in another country. Make sure you are safe and protected, and following the law, by knowing your insurance options.

Whether you choose to buy a comprehensive insurance or the theft and damage excess protection you need by law, it’s important to know your options before you leave to collect your rental.

Here are our Italy car rental tips to make sure your rental experience is as safe as it can be:

You have to purchase insurance

The first thing to know about car insurance in Italy is that it is mandatory. You cannot use your credit card as car insurance in Italy, and have to purchase a specific insurance in the country or before you leave with the rental company.

The law requires you to have a minimum of CDW (Collison Damage Waiver) and Theft Protection coverage. If you do not have these insurances you will not be covered to drive in Italy.

What is CDW?

Italy Car Rental CDW Insurance

If you have CDW, which is mandatory in Italy, the rental company waives the right to charge you a high deductible if you are involved in an accident. It also covers the cost of most of the car’s damages. The insurance typically costs between $10 and $30 per day, and in the event of an accident you will only have to pay an agreed excess, or deductible, to cover the costs. It’s also possible to choose a Zero Excess option on some insurances in Italy, which means you won’t need to pay anything.

Buy in advance

The best way to ensure that you are covered for Italy is to buy the insurance that comes with the car rental company. Make sure this is as “inclusive” as possible, and that it includes third party liability insurance, CDW, Value Added Tax, Unlimited Mileage, and Theft Protection. Most comprehensive rates will come with everything you need for Italy, including Fire Insurance, which gives you unlimited coverage for the whole vehicle.

Additional insurances

Personal Effects Protection Insurance

There are a number of additional types of insurance you can also add-on onto your package to ensure you and your belongings stay safe while in Italy. These are optional, but can give you further peace of mind when driving in the European country.

Personal Effects Protection can be added on locally, and effectively protects any items left inside your car. Personal Accident Coverage can also be bought in Italy, and usually costs around $8 per day.

Check your excesses

Make sure you check any excess or deductibles on your insurance. These mean that in the event of an accident, or the need to use your insurance, you will have to pay a non-refundable amount towards the damages. In some cases, there is no deductible or excess to pay or you may be entitled to a refundable excess, which means the money will be held but returned to you. This is known as a “Zero Excess Rate” and is often available on fully comprehensive insurances.

Add travel insurance

It’s also a good idea to take out a separate travel insurance plan if you are planning to drive abroad. Travel insurance plans usually cover things like medical expenses and trip cancellations and can be an extra helping hand or peace of mind when it comes to renting a car in Italy.
