Five Bizarre Museums from Around the World

The Hair Museum of Avanos

Most of us hit up a plethora of museums wherever we go on vacation. Most cities, whether they are fairly young US cities or historic European cities, offer up the same choices. History, Science, Art… We love those, but if you are looking for something a little more offbeat, you might want to consider checking out one of these bizarre locations.

Hair Museum of Avanos, Turkey

When potter Chez Galip’s good friend told him she was leaving the town of Avanos, he was pretty upset. But she wanted to leave him something to remember her by. In a romantic gesture, she snipped off a lock of her hair and gifted it to the artist. This was more than 30 years ago, and since, more than 16,000 women have been inspired to leave Galip with a lock of their hair as well. Today you can view all of this hair, along with some of Chez’s pottery, at the Hair Museum Housed within a small cave beneath a pottery shop, the hair you will see comes from across the globe. Truth be told, the ambience is a little on the creepy side, but this museum is definitely unique!

Orty’s Clown Museum in Essen, Germany

What is creepier than a hair museum? Try a clown museum on for size! The location’s back story is actually pretty sweet and inspiring. Ortrud “Orty” Kastaun was working hard on overcoming an alcohol addiction back in 1995. One day in therapy, she completed a jigsaw puzzle that revealed the face of a clown, and it ignited something inside of her. She has since set a new Guinness World Record for the largest collection of clown related items on the planet. She has so many clowns that she opened the museum to make space in her home. She finds them rather joyful, but personally, they give this writer the heebie jeebies!

Computerspiele Museum of Berlin, Germany

Shut down in the year 2000, this geeky paradise reopened its doors in 2011 and gamers everywhere rejoiced. Completely dedicated to the history of the video game, you will find everything from consoles and hardware to storyboards and soundtracks in this museum. Most of the installations are vintage, and a lot of them are interactive as well. There are more than 300 different video games within the walls of Computerspiele dating all the way back to 1951.

Nonseum in Herrnbaumgarten, Austria

There are plenty of museums dedicated to or featuring some of the amazing inventions that make our lives easier today, but what about all of those duds? You know, the inventions that nobody was interested in? Look no further than Nonseum, the museum of inventions that nobody wanted. Some of it is quirky, and some of it is down right dangerous. A mini guillotine for trimming your fingernails? That sounds like a right quick way to lose a phalange! Opened in 1983, the Nonseum is home to hundreds of crazy inventions. Reminds me of the Island of Misfit Toys!

The Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, Croatia

Hmmm… not the most cheerful location. You may want to skip this one if you are on a romantic getaway. None the less, this museum is truly unique. After Olinka Vistina and Drazen Grubisic went through a painful break up, the artists decided to create a museum of all of the items and memories they found so hard to let go of. When people heard about the museum, the donations started pouring in. Teddy bears, love letters, and even edible underpants have all been given to the museum by broken hearted folks from around the world.

Best UK Road Trips: Places to Visit in Wales by Car
Wales may be small, but it does have some of the biggest and most impressive scenery in all of the UK. By renting a car and driving around the country you can really maximize the spectacular views, and stop whenever you want to for photo opportunities!

There are a number of road trips you can take when visiting Wales, and in fact Wales has some of the best UK road trips thanks to its interesting history and unbeatable landscape.

To begin your journey, here are some of the best places to visit in Wales by car:

Swansea, Wales

Swansea, Wales

One-day road trip

Wales is small, and so even if you only have a day to explore the country you can still see a lot of its natural beauty by jumping in the car and revving your engine. Start your day in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter – with its castles and coastal views and city charm. Next take a trip through the countryside of South Wales, and head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum, where you can take tours underground and experience a real coal mine. Finally, spend the early evening watching the sunset across the spectacular scenery of Abergavenny, a market town with delicious local food and a stunning mountain backdrop.

Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

Two-day road trip

If you have a couple of days to spare to enjoy Wales, head to the west of the country. Here you can find some of the more intriguing sites and quirky settings in the UK. Head first to Carmarthenshire – the home of the Brecon Beacons National Park, where you can take long walks along the rugged coastline and craggy cliffs. Next explore the breathtaking Coastal Path of Pembrokeshire and spend some time relaxing on its pretty beaches, the perfect place to stop overnight and relax. Pembrokeshire is also home to the historic sites of the Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne, St. Govan’s Chapel, a chapel built into the side of a limestone cliff,  and St. Non’s Well and its ancient history.

Anglesey Lighthouse, Wales

Anglesey Lighthouse, Wales

Three-day road trip

If you have a good three days to see the sights of Wales then be sure to begin your journey in the north east of the country. Up here you will find some of the most impressive landscapes and interesting villages and towns.

Start your adventure by staying in the stunning village of Beddgelert in Snowdonia, the famous coastal mountain region that is picture-perfect and untouched. The medieval Welsh village is stunning and perfect for some relaxing time before continuing the drive. On the edge of Snowdonia National Park you will come to Portmeirton, known for being the setting of the movie ‘The Prisoner’ but also as one of the most stunning Italianate villages.

Next drive along the coast and take in the town of Caernarfon, a royal town with an overbearing castle and beautiful port. On your final day, head out to the island of Anglesey, with its Celtic folklore and Roman history that dates back to 60 AD, the island is fascinating and breathtaking.
