Using Your Beach Vacation Surroundings for a Great Workout

A big Thank You to Jentry Nielsen for submitting this guest blog to Kemwel! To find out how Jentry keeps in shape while globetrotting, read on!

beach woman stretching 300x199 Using Your Beach Vacation Surroundings for a Great WorkoutWith summer quickly approaching, many of us are going to start planning those summer vacations. It takes a lot of hard work to get swimsuit ready, so don’t let the prime time when you want to show off your body stop you from fitting in your workouts.

Many beach areas are prime locations to get workouts in. While vacations should be relaxing and fun, you don’t have to fall off your workout regimen.

Here are some tips to make sure you are sticking with your routine, even while traveling.

If possible, book a hotel with a gym- Many hotels now have gyms located on the premises for your convenience. Check online or call ahead to make sure the hotel you want to book has a fitness center with the equipment you are looking for. Many properties might only have the minimum, like one treadmill, but if you have weaker knees and prefer elliptical trainers, you may use this as an excuse to not workout while you are there.

Go swimming- Almost any hotel you run into is going to have a pool of some sort. If not, go swimming out in the ocean. Swimming is one of the best forms of cardio exercise one can get. Get out there and take a few laps for a good workout. If you are worried about others getting in your way, head out early in the morning before all the little ones arrive.

Play in the waves – Not only is swimming in the ocean great exercise, playing is a great workout as well. Who doesn’t love jumping up and down over the waves? This is a great form of plyometric exercise, which is proven to increase cardio burn.

beach man running 200x300 Using Your Beach Vacation Surroundings for a Great WorkoutRunning or walking along the beach – Moving through the sand is a great workout. When you are running/walking on an uneven surface, it forces your body to work harder to stabilize itself, thus in turn, burning more calories.

Playing sand volleyball – This incorporates that uneven running surface and forces you to move around after the ball. Plus it’s fun being out in the sun, getting your tan on, and enjoying time with your friends.

Surfing – This is an excellent total body strength workout. You are using so many leg and core muscles to not only get your body up, but to keep yourself stabilized on the board.

Bike Ride- Many places along the beach let you rent bikes to ride along the coast. Bike riding maintains balance by using the core of muscles and the abdominal area, making for a great workout. This will also get you out to see more of the sights the town has to offer.

Workout on the beach – There is really no sense in hiding it. Stand on the beach and do your workout routine right there in the sunlight. You’ll get a great tan and have the added weight of the sand to increase your calorie burning even more.

Here are a few workouts you can do right on the beach with little to no equipment:

Stretch and start with a 5-10 minute warm-up jog on the beach

Two minutes of sit-ups
Two minutes of push-ups
Two minutes of jogging in place
Two minutes of knee highs
Two minutes of jumping rope
Two minutes of shadow boxing
Two minutes of jumping jacks
(Two minute rest and repeat once)

Finish off with a 5-10 minute cool down of light jogging and some stretching!

Or try this full body workout: This one does involve light weights; you can fill liter water bottles with sand instead.

Stretch and start with a 5-10 minute warm-up jog on the beach
repeat these 4 moves 3 times- resting 60 seconds between each set

Squat with a Dumbbell Upright Row (15 Reps)
Plank with Reverse Row (10 Reps)
Reverse Wood-Chop (16 Reps)
Burpees (10 Reps)

Finish off with a 5-10 minute cool down of light jogging and some stretching!

Working out on vacation can be fun. Involve those you are traveling with to make sure you don’t lose out on time with them as well. Don’t let your vacation time ruin all the hard work you’ve achieved thus far, causing you to pack on those long lost pounds.

If this guy can fit in exercising all over the world, you can fit in a little workout on the beach!

Around the World in 20 Songs

Whether it’s their home, sweet home or the place they have spent their whole life trying to get to, artists from around the world have continuously immortalized their beloved cities in song. Sometimes, wanderlust alone is a love affair, and just the thrill of the open road provides inspiration for whole entire albums. Here are 20 songs for traveling, so load up you iPod and enjoy this globetrotting track list as you hit the road on your own adventure.

  1. The Clash – London Calling

This punk rock anthem is probably the first song that springs to most people’s minds. It may not be a love song to London as much as it is a call to action, but never the less, it’s a classic.

  1. Billy Joel – Vienna

I’m going to honest with you here… I don’t like Billy Joel. I know, I know. However, I am in love with this beautiful song. Is Vienna waiting for you?

  1. The Beatles – Back in the USSR

Listen, Joe Strummer, just because you made the list doesn’t mean I agree with that whole “phony Beatlemania” thing.

  1. They Might Be Giants – Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

If you remember the Animaniacs, than you certainly know this song! If you are looking for a cheap car rental in Turkey, make sure you look for Istanbul, not Constantinople.

  1. Elton John – Mona Lisas and Madhatters

Elton John’s bittersweet tale of New York City is a beautiful classic. There are so many songs about NYC to choose from, but this is one of my all time favorites.

  1. Guster – Amsterdam

This is the largest city in the Netherlands, but with a cheap car rental in Amsterdam, you won’t have to worry about getting lost.

  1. Crosby, Stills & Nash– Marrakesh Express

Pick up a cheap car rental in South Africa and tour the entire continent! Head up north to Morocco and take a ride on the Marrakesh Express. All aboard the train!

  1. Tom Waits – Singapore

The crew on this ship doesn’t sound too trustworthy, but Rain Dogs is one of the greatest records of all time, so I would probably follow Tom Waits to Singapore.

  1. PJ Harvey – Let England Shake

Okay, so this one may not be a love letter to England either, but it’s a fantastic song off an amazing record and makes a great addition to any mix tape.

  1. Moody Blues – Boulevard De La Madelaine

Ah, Paris. This romantic city often acts as a backdrop for many a broken heart. Hopefully the rest of us will have better luck on the Boulevard De La Madelaine.

  1. Duran Duran – Rio

It’s starting to get mighty cold in my part of the world. A vacation to Brazil sounds like the perfect way to combat the chill!

  1. Bob Dylan – Mozambique

A cheap car rental in South Africa can get you over to Mozambique. According to old Bob, the girls are very pretty here. You may fall in love with more than just the country!

  1. Men at Work – Land Down Under

You will have this one stuck in your head for the rest of the day. At least I will. The Australian protagonist in this story travels all over the world, from Brussels to Bombay.

  1. Willie Nelson – On The Road Again

No travel themed mixed CD is complete without this country classic. If you are going places that you’ve never been and seeing things that you may never see again, make sure you include this on your playlist.

  1. Three Dog Night – Never Been to Spain

I get a lot of flack for my love of Three Dog Night, but I can’t help it. They’re awesome! If you’ve never been, book your cheap car rental in Spain today.

  1. David Bowie – Life on Mars

Okay, so you can’t book a car rental on Mars, at least not yet. But Hunky Dory is one of the best albums of all time and Life on Mars is a classic.

  1. Adam and the Ants – Young Parisians

Get a first hand look at how young Parisians live with a cheap car rental in Paris. Don’t forget to add this fun little ditty to your playlist.

  1. Billy Bragg and Wilco – California Stars

This beautiful interpretation of Woody Guthrie’s unrecorded California Stars is sure to have you dreaming of the west coast.

  1. Talking Heads – Road to Nowhere

Little Monsters, anyone? The Talking Heads had a city in mind, a so-called paradise. What is your idea of Paradise? A Tuscan summer? Or maybe spring break in Cancun?

  1. Roger Miller – King of the Road

This trek around the world will have you feeling like the King of the Road in no time. Pop this free-wheeling classic on your iPod, sit back, and enjoy the trip.

Winter Getaway

alps Winter Getaway

It’s snowing in Geneva right now and it’s time to jump on the opportunity and book the ski trip to the Alps you’ve always dreamed of. I am originally from Colorado, so I’m no stranger to mountains and I must say I was in awe the first time I visited Switzerland. Whereas the Rockies slope gradually to great heights (keeping in mind that Denver is already a mile high), the Alps seem to erupt out of the ground like a sudden tectonic shift sent the peaks rocketing skyward out of what was once a placid landscape.

Many Alpine ski resorts are above tree line and this adds to the dramatic nature of the peaks. The white caps are huge, leaving wide open vistas with no trees to hinder the view. It truly feels like you are on top of the world.

If you come to ski, but you don’t want to limit your options to the small resort villages, Geneva is a great choice for your base of operations. The city sits at the western edge of Lake Geneva and is buttressed by the lake on one side and Mont Blanc on the other. The old world architecture and the city’s nightlife and arts venues make it a stand out choice for your accommodations.

It will be necessary to rent a car if you stay in Geneva. The closest ski resort is just over an hour drive in Chamonix, France. There are countless Swiss ski resorts near the eastern edge of Lake Geneva and it is a breathtaking drive along the lakeside and into the Alps. These resorts are approximately a two hour drive from Geneva city center, but the scenery is easily worth the drive.

Don’t let another winter go by without this winter adventure. Kemwel can provide you with a cheap car rental in Geneva and great customer service, so book today!

A Second Look at Australia

melbourne 300x200 A Second Look at AustraliaWinter is fast approaching here in the U.S., making it the opportune time to visit Australia. While we here in North America are dealing with the snow and cold weather, the Southern Hemisphere is enjoying their summer. It may be a rather long flight, but by the time February rolls around there is not much I wouldn’t do for some warmth and sunshine. When most people think of Australia they think of kangaroos, koala bears, and vast open spaces i.e.; the outback. While these things do represent Australia, they are only the tip of the iceberg. Australia is also home to beautiful and modern cosmopolitan cities. Sydney is home to millions of people that speak many languages other than English. There are over 150,000 Cantonese speakers in Sydney alone! Sydney has more in common with melting pot cities like Los Angeles or New York City than people may think.

Sydney is not the only metropolitan area getting attention. The city of Melbourne is starting to attract foodies with several high profile chefs as well as the Queen Victoria Market, the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Another huge draw is the vineyards. Australia’s reputation for wine has improved greatly over the last two decades and there are five wine growing regions in the Melbourne area alone.

Australia is now also producing some of the world’s finest beef. Whereas Japan was at one time the only supplier of Wagyu (Kobe) beef, Australian cattle farmers are now producing Wagyu and crossbreeding it with Australian cattle which is resulting in beef to rival any other.

If you have always dreamed of visiting Australia and thought “someday,” make that day today and start planning your trip. Kemwel is here to help enjoy the summer down under and offers great deals including cheap car rental in Australia.

Exploring the Colosseum

Colosseum 300x200 Exploring the ColosseumFor almost 2,000 years, the Colosseum has been a landmark of Roman culture and history. It stands as an immense reminder of times past when gladiators took front stage before spectators, often fighting to their death. Great beasts of Africa, such as elephants, lions, panthers, bears and crocodiles, were brought to the arena so that a hunt could be recreated. Today it serves as an attraction for any of us who want to experience a part of history far beyond what is easily imaginable. Nestled between two parks named for ancient emperors, it seems almost effortless to immerse yourself in the illustrious past of this city. Now you can experience it like never before.

Guided tours have been offered for years, but for the first time in history the hypogeum is now open to the public. This underground network of tunnels is where the gladiators waited for their time to battle and the animals were caged before being released into the arena. In addition, the third levels have been officially opened as well. This means that as a visitor, you can finally explore this monument from the very top to the subterranean depths.

This extended tour is available now through November 30th and must be reserved in advance. With a cheap rental car in Rome to get you there, you’ll be prepared for the experience of a lifetime.

Perilous Ventures in the South of Spain

shutterstock 15133732 211x300 Perilous Ventures in the South of SpainEven though I love the heart-pounding excitement of roller coasters, my fear of heights may just well keep my sense of adventure in check for this extreme adrenaline rush. El Caminito del Rey, or The King’s Little Pathway, is located near the town of Álora and is only a short drive with a car rental in Malaga.

Built in 1901 as a way to connect two hydroelectric power plants, this three meter wide walkway follows the sheer walls of a narrow gorge in El Churro over 350 feet above ground. Originally intended to provide a way to transport materials, it took four years to complete and was inaugurated by the crossing of King Alfonso XIII in 1921, thus earning its name.

The concrete of the pathway has deteriorated severely in recent years and in some spots has collapsed completely, leaving only naked steel beams. Though the hand-railings are gone along the majority of the path, a via ferrata safety-wire runs alongside the walkway. Due to the dangerous conditions, the local government has closed both entrances to the public making it illegal to access the walkway. Despite this, Caminito del Rey has become a popular attraction for people looking for a challenging and daunting experience.

Not quite brave enough to follow in the footsteps of a king? The regional government has proposed a restoration of the pathway to make it safe for public access, so hopefully the rest of us can experience this amazing piece of structural history!

Say ‘Yes’ to a Peugeot Lease

Transportation while traveling is an important element to your European vacation and should be one of the first things you plan for, along with your flights and hotels.  There is nothing more convenient than having a car while traveling in Europe, as it allows you to travel at your own leisure. Those that are traveling to Europe for an extended period of time should look into a Peugeot lease through Kemwel – you get to tour Europe in a brand new Peugeot! Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me!

The short term leasing options with Kemwel are the perfect solution for those that are traveling in Europe for 17 days or longer. The Peugeot short term lease includes the following perks:

-Fully comprehensive insurance with a zero deductible

-The rates are exempt from value added tax and all local fees (it’s true, no road tax or airport fees!)

-24-hour roadside assistance

-Unlimited mileage

-And unlike with a car rental, you can get a short term lease at the minimum age of 18!

One great benefit with leasing a Peugeot in Europe is the ability to travel on international one ways that are typically not allowed or carry an expensive one way fee when renting a car. You can pick up a Peugeot lease in Rome and drop it off in London, or lease a Peugeot in Paris and drop it off in Barcelona.  We’re not done yet, another great benefit is that you’re allowed to travel to almost all of the Eastern European countries with your Peugeot. Picture a relaxing drive along the gorgeous coast of Croatia now..

Making the Most of your Memorial Day Vacation

Memorial Day is a National Holiday that is celebrated in remembrance of all the U.S men and women who have given their lives serving in the armed forces.  Most, if not all local businesses will close for the day, extending to their employees an opportunity to rest, and enjoy a warm, late spring day.

Those who have the opportunity to utilize this vacation day have tons of ideas as to what they may do with their time off.  Some have told us they are planning a long weekend by the coast in a tropical bungalow on the beach, while others have told of their plans to stay in the country at a cozy bed and breakfast.

Many vacationers we’ve been speaking with even have plans to leave the United States and take a vacation to France.  From here they plan on renting a car in Aix-en-Provence and driving over to catch the remainder of the Aix Comedy Festival: a hilarious showcase of comedians who promise to send all attendees into downright hysterics, just as long as they are able to understand basic French.  Some of our friends have been planning month long vacations and are reserved to use our Peugeot Buy Back Program.
