Take a Lake Como Holiday this Fall in Italy
Surrounded by the snow-covered Alps of Northern Italy, Lake Como is one of Italy’s most beautiful lakes. Enjoy the nearby villages and towns, including Bellagio and the main town of Como, on a luxurious Lake Como holiday in Italy.
One of the deepest lakes in Europe, and the third-largest lake in Italy, Lake Como is a popular tourist attraction. Home to celebrities such as Madonna, George Clooney and Versace, the beautiful and luxurious lake destination is extremely popular during the high summer season. This means the summer is the busiest and the most expensive time to travel to the region.
Save money and stress by traveling to Lake Como in the fall. Not only will you spend less, but the fall in Italy is also one of the most beautiful times to see the lake. It’s not too hot and it’s not too cold, the perfect time to explore the lake and surrounding towns and villages in an idyllic climate. Instead of letting the summer crowds spoil your views of the stunning panoramic lake, take a fall holiday in Italy and take in some these top attractions in Lake Como:
Take a ferry to Bellagio
Explore the lake from the water by taking ferries between some of Lake Como’s key towns, including Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia. Take trips to each of the towns and enjoy their picturesque architecture and quaint atmosphere, particularly in Bellagio, one of the lake’s most beautiful towns. Fall is the perfect time to explore the towns, with their cobbled steps and poetic history. Bellagio’s narrow streets are as romantic as they come, but make sure you bring some walking shoes!
Visit the town of Como
Centered around a lakefront promenade, Como is a medieval town with examples of Rationalist architects that laid the foundations of Modernist architecture. Walk around the town and explore some of Como’s top sights, including the gardens of Villa Olmo, Duomo Cathedral, the Museo Archeologico, and the 11th-century Basilica di Sant’Abbondio. Como is also the silk production captial of Europe and its excellent Silk Museum is worth a visit.
Enjoy the Gardens at Villa Carlotta
The 18th-century palace Villa Carlotta is famous for its beautiful gardens, which stay green all year round. Located in Lake Como’s mildest spot, the Tremezzina Riviera, the incredible hillside gardens are spectacular and warrant at least an afternoon of your holiday. Take the ferry to Tremezzo to reach Villa Carlotta.
Visit the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio
Located on the western edge of Lake Como, the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is a made up of 15 baroque-inspired chapels that were built throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Located on a hillside slope next to olive groves and woods, the chapels and monsatery are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit Villa Balbianello
On the western shore and on a small wooded peninsula lies Villa Balbianello, a stunning villa that overlooks Lake Como. The beautiful Villa has been featured in movies such as Casino Royale, A Month by the Lake and even Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. Visit the Villa Museum with its intact furniture and memorabilia.
