Autumn Island Escapes: Do Ibiza on a Budget
Ibiza: the island of wild nightlife, hot sun and white sands, no wonder it’s one of the most popular island escapes in Europe. But, if you haven’t heard yet, the island (particularly the tourist hot spots) can be very expensive.
However, there are ways to save money and plan the holiday of a lifetime in Ibiza without breaking the bank. What’s more, if you travel to the Spanish island during the fall months you will not only benefit from cooler weather, you will also save lots of money both on your flights and hotel, as well as costs while you are on the trip itself. Fall travel in Europe is often overlooked, but is in fact one of the best times to visit the continent. And without the hoards of other tourists on the island, you get to experience the real Ibiza and even meet some locals for much less than you may think.
Here are our top tips for doing Ibiza on a budget:
Where to stay
The best budget accommodations can be found in Ibiza Town. While you won’t be staying in the heart of the wild party district of San Antoni, you will be surrounded by beautiful Old Town history, and affordable bars and restaurants. Try the Hostal Parque for a great spot in the city with plenty of amenities, such as wifi and air conditioning. Or if you prefer to stay on the beach, the area south of Ibiza has a number of budget options, such as the Hostal Mar Y Sal with its own terrace bar. The north can be more expensive, and the best option may be to camp at one of the two campsites Camping Es Cana and Camping La Playa Cala Martina, which is on the beach.
What to do
To discover the real Ibiza away from the tourist traps, visit the high town of Dalt Vila. The UNESCO World Heritage Site feels like it’s all upside down, but the labyrinth of cobbled streets and white walls is a beautiful, and free, place to spend a day. Pick up a free audio tour from the tourist office on Vara de Rey to uncover the town’s hidden secrets.
You should also spend a few days of your vacation relaxing on the beach. Ibiza has a number of beautiful white sandy beaches to offer that won’t cost you a dime, such as Las Salinas Beach and Cala Conta Beach. Avoid paying the eight euros for a sun lounger or for the overpriced beach restaurants, and bring a towel and your own snacks from the local supermarket. If you prefer to spend your vacations taking on a brand new terrain, then there are plenty of national parks you can explore Las Salinas National Park and discover salt lakes, ghost trees, and rugged cliffs. For a unique budget souvenir from the island head to the quirky local flea market, San Jordi, best visited on a Saturday.
Where to eat
Enjoy fresh, local food at Ibiza’s Mercado Viejo (old market) for a cultural lunch or at Es Tap Nou, a fruit and vegetable market with a reasonably priced cafe inside where they will make your chosen produce into a fresh salad or sandwich for you. For a budget sit-down evening meal you don’t have to look far. Try Comidas San Juan or Los Pasajeros with its balcony tables in the Old Town, for some delicious home-cooked fare. Or if you prefer not to miss out on the island’s most popular and most expensive dish of the moment, Sushi, you can head to Sushiya Aoyama and pay half the price.
Where to drink
There are a number of late-night bars in the Old Town, including Teatro Pereya, that offer live music. However, you don’t have to be in the “clubbing” capital of Europe and not experience a nightclub! Entry can be extremely expensive, but if you prepare and decide which clubs you want to go to before you leave for your holiday, it is possible. Look for free or cheaper tickets online in advance, you will save hundreds of dollars.
For example to go to one of Ibiza’s most famous clubs, Pacha, you can pay up to 70 euros on the door, but if you book in advance you can get them for 39 euros. You can also book a meal at Pacha’s restaurant to get free access to the nightclub, and while the meal will be at least 70 euros per person, it will be some of the best food you’ll have in Ibiza. We Love, a party at Playa d’En Bossa, is one of the best clubs on the island and if you get in before 9pm the entry is just 20 euros. You can also look out for free events and festivals going on on the island, and plan your trip around them.
