Touring France by Car

Set on the spectacular Rhone river in France’s Provence region, Avignon is one of the country’s most impressive cities, with reams of history in its magical buildings.

Once the center of Roman Catholicism, the city was left with majestic structures that represented its religious power, in particular the World Heritage listed Palais des Papes.

Once you have discovered the magnificent beauty of this prestigious city, why not explore the surrounding region in all its natural beauty and historic prowess by taking unforgettable day trips from Avignon. By touring France by car you can explore the heart of the Provence Region’s incredible countryside at your own pace and discover tucked-away villages and towns that make France simply delightful.

Here are some of the most amazing destinations within a short drive from Avignon:

Saint Remy

Known for being the town where Van Gogh painted “Starry Night”, Saint Remy is a picture-perfect village that dates back to the ruins of its circular 14th century town wall. Its stunning Gallo-Roman interior features medieval buildings and ancient cobblestone streets. Take a walk through the streets and stop off at the many shops selling Provencal items, including regional pottery and sunflower plates inspired by Van Gogh himself.

Walking along the narrow ancient streets is a real treat, as they criss-cross the canal on little bridges that lead to more alleyways. Many of the stunning mansions of the city have been converted into stunning galleries and museums, giving visitors an insight into the city’s marvelous buildings.

Most of the buildings are made of red rocks and have red roofs, distinguishing the village from the others in the region.
